ACTIVITIES

Youth Garden

ALL AGES

Mid-May through October

Saturday Mornings, 10-11:30am

The Gifford Park Youth Garden (GPYG), started in 2004, is a free 16-week program led by volunteers and parents teaching youth how to garden on individual raised garden beds located in the Gifford Park Community Garden at 35th & Cass Street. We have chickens (and occasionally goats) on site for kids to learn animal care. GPYG is a safe space where youth can be creative with art and music, explore our natural environment, and have fun while working together, promoting good health while getting their hands dirty.

The organization of the Youth Garden program starts February/March when parents, youth, and volunteers meet to plan the program and schedule activities for each Saturday morning from May through August. We meet regularly before the start of the season to fine tune the program and schedule. Every Saturday morning from May to August volunteers and youth participants help tend youth plots and set up what is needed for specific programming for that day. The program includes a final potluck where everyone (youth, parents, volunteers) is invited to prepare and share a meal made including vegetables grown in the garden.
